"Dragon Fire"

# 5129. A Secession or Art Nouveau Zsolnay table lamp. Titled "Dragon Fire" four Dragons surround the base of the lamp breathing billowy fire to the top where the font is set into the rim. The vase itself is about 19" tall. The metalwork (copper) font and rim are finely made, conforming to the rim of the vase. Round raised factory mark of the era. Form number 5940 dating this extraordinary Zsolnay item to 1900. Each of the dragons is in high relief. Condition: glaze lines in the base. The metal work is period to the vase. There are no apparent restorations. The font and metal work frame (two separate pieces) easily remove from the top revealing a finished edge as if this item could have been made to be just a vase. It is a very successful kerosene lamp. The separation of color: gold plumes of 'fire' are in contrast against the eosin blue background. Price 65,000.00.

Yellow arrow showing one of the two glaze lines on the side of the lamp base

The base: paper label with the form number (5940) incised form number (5940) and round raised mark of the era.

The partial label would have shown the price in Forints probably.

There are two separate inserts for the kerosene fluid: one fitted to the contours of the ceramic lip made of tin and the other font made of copper.

The glaze extends over the lip showing a finished uncut or altered edge.

The copper fluid insert.

Four dragons surround the base breathing golden 'fire' toward the top of the lamp.

Yellow arrows showing the other bottom glaze line.
