FINE ART FROM THE DRAWING ROOM ANTIQUES LOCATED IN HISTORIC NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND

#2949. Pictured is a framed carved marble frieze. Mid 19th century. The flat marble is carved in relief depicting a vase filled with various flowers. Czarist Russian. Frame size : 24 1/2" x 29 ". Old restoration to the lower section . See darkened area bottom right. This item could date as early as the late 18th century. We suspect that it was removed from a palace and put into this frame sometime in the mid-nineteenth century. The frame dates from about 1820. The frieze is carved from one piece of marble. The detail is quite extraordinary. The break think may have taken place when it was removed from a wall before it was placed in this frame. Price. $12,500.00.
