The Dance Card Museum

Dance Card # 203. This is a very rare American Dance Card titled on the front cover: "Illustrated Program of the Liederkranz Masquerade Ball ! Thursday Evening, February 7th, 1889, Metropolitan Opera House, New York designed and illustrated by Joseph Keppler. Size: (folded 3.75" x 6". Condition: covers very stained, crackled and printing faded ( we suspect that is was originally silver). Inside part of the program is missing and no dances are listed, no pencil. Still all in all it is a very rare card. Price: $250.00.

The caption above: "Amid a hundred thousand cheers, Champagne-corks popping all the way - Behold the Liederkranz Committee Steaming in haste up New York Bay (and on the next page) "So here Prince Carnival appears- Give him the freedom of the City" Note the Statue of Liberty on the top left in the "Harbor of New York".

The figures are titled above: Punchinello, Judy, Jack Pudding, Price and Princess, Jesters, Clown, etc. etc., Herald.

Above the figures is the " Master of Ceramonies, Pantaloon, Harlequin, Columbine" and the words below state: " So see all the gay folk of Europe come tripping along in his train, En route for the Liederkranz Ball-room - for music and mirth and champagne".

Very hard to read; we suspect that the type was originally silver colored and it has tarnished. Stated: "Executive Committee - Paul Goepel President, Emil Under Vice- President, Justus Roggenburg, Treasurer, Hubert Cilus, Secretary, (committee members)Wm Albrecht, Jos Keppler, Henry Claussen, Felix Kramer, Wm. Vigelius, Karl Merz, Rudolf Schaefer, Charles Plock, William Steinway, Charles Vaneot.Scenic Manager: Theodor Mabelmann; Costumers: W. Schwind - Louis Nehrig; Floral Decorations: Hanfft Brothers; Music: A. Bernstein, F. Leibolot; Restaurant: Gustave Schmitt".
