# CT3. A watercolor of Arthur Henry Hallam (1811-1833). Early 19th century; before 1833 when Hallam died. Hallam was an English poet and a close friend of Alfred Tennyson. Described as a "doomed young man" of his generation. He attended Eaton where he met future prime minister Gladstone; other friends included James Milnes Gaskell. At Trinity College he met Tennyson and their friendship was swift and deep. He died at age 22 in Vienna after a short illness, a stroke.Tennyson described Hallam "as near perfection as a mortal man could be." There was an engraving of this images produced shortly after his death. It is rare and very well done and we attribute this watercolor to Ellen Wallace Sharples - 1769-1849. She was an English painter who specialized in portraits in pastel and watercolor miniatures on ivory. Frame size is 12" x 13.5". The price is: $1,500.00.
