4 A. Titled: The Vernon House Headquarters of Gen. Rochambeau, Newport, R.I. Printed by A.C. Bosselman & Company., New York. c. 1905. Part of this home dates from the early 18th century. It was enlarged in 1759 by Metcalf Bowler. This exterior is att. to Peter Harrison. Bowler was a wealthy merchant and created for himself a one of Newport's most elegant town houses. Rochambeau used the Vernon House for his headquarters during the Revolution. The home is privately owned.
