# 7165. A carved stone figural group of three lions: father, mother and pup. The artist is Lillian Swann Saarinen and this sculpture is not signed or dated. The inspiration we believe is from the book "Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. Size is 42" wide x 12" deep and 14" tall weighs plus 250 lbs. Condition: not signed and the right ear of the pup was broken of decades ago and has not survived. We do not know the name of the black stone that Saarinen used for this sculpture. This pieced received considerable attention when it was exhibited and various venues. It is mentioned in personal family notes. Saarinen (April 12, 1912 - May 22, 1995) was an American Sculptor, artist and writer. She was the first wife of Finnish-American architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen, with whom she sometimes collaborated. She graduated from the Art Students League of New York and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Born in NYC to Dr. Arthur Wharton Swann and Susan Ridley Sedgwick. She studied with Alexander Archipenko and Albert Stewart, Heinz Warneke and Brenda Putnam. Studied under Carl Miles at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She was an alternative on the first U.S. Women's alpine ski team at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Her commissions were for public buildings throughout the midwest and east coast. She exhibited a bronze sculpture at the 1939 Worlds Fair titled "Night" renamed "Bagheera" which was mounted in a fountain in The Boston Garden and is featured in the Boston Women's Heritage Trail. She won several awards throughout her life. Her works seldom come on the market. Price: $6,500.00.
