# 7158. A bronze figural group of two panthers playing, the artist is Lillian Swann Saarinen and dated 1937; the inspiration we believe is from the book "Jungle Book" by Rudyard Kipling. Size is 19" x 11" and the bronze is 30.5" tall; weighs plus 100 lbs. Saarinen (April 12, 1912 - May 22, 1995) was an American Sculptor, artist and writer. She was the first wife of Finnish-American architect and industrial designer Eero Saarinen, with whom she sometimes collaborated. She graduated from the Art Students League of New York and Cranbrook Academy of Art. Born in NYC to Dr. Arthur Wharton Swann and Susan Ridley Sedgwick. She studied with Alexander Archipenko and Albert Stewart, Heinz Warneke and Brenda Putnam. Studied under Carl Miles at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. She was an alternative on the first U.S. Women's alpine ski team at the 1936 Winter Olympics. Her commissions were for public buildings throughout the midwest and east coast. She exhibited a bronze sculpture at the 1939 Worlds Fair titled "Night" renamed "Bagheera" which was mounted in a fountain in The Boston Garden and is featured in the Boston Women's Heritage Trail.
