# 7034. A leather Louis Vuitton trunk. Late 19th / early 20th century. Size: 17.5" high x 24" wide x 21" deep. Formerly the property of Herbert S. Riegel who worked at Glen Farm in Portsmouth, RI. The trunk was gifted to Mr. Reigel by Mrs. Edith Bishop Taylor Nicholson, the widow of Moses Taylor and this trunk was part of the Glen Farm Estate in Portsmouth. Mrs. Nicholson was one of the richest women in America at one time and the owner of Portsmouth's largest estate (Glen Farm). Extensive information about Mrs. Nicholson can be found on-line. This Louis Vuitton trunk: all the brass elements in marked "M.V." or "Louis Vuitton." Condition: The interior is stained and fabric is frayed. The exterior leather strap is severed in two places. One side leather strap handle is unattached. The Louis Vuitton paper label is not attached (listing Paris, Nice, Lille, London); a corner is missing. Monograms: EBT & MT for Moses Taylor. Printed numerals on the inner lid: 189869. This trunk made several trips across the Atlantic. Not pristine; however, its history and use reflect and elegant memento of The Gilded Age.
