# 5985. A Grand Tour sewing box. Circa 1800-1829. Tortoise, bone, gold and cut steel. Size: 16.5cm x 10.5cm and 7cm tall. Paper label reads: "Kalvertstraat No 24. Truffino Aine - Jouaillier et Byoutier a Amsterdam" The gold pieces in this box at tested at 18k gold. Originally sold in a gallery in Amsterdam but the item may have been made at a workshop in Berlin or Vienna. There are hallmarks on the gold that we do not recognize and very difficult to photograph. A card came with this box stating: "Helena Funke deNeufville, Emily de Neufville Wynne, Dorthea Wynne Dennison, Sally Dennison Mackay - Emily got this from her sister Madeliane just prior to the outbreak of WWII. Madelaine lived in Berlin. Emily was stopped by customs in Paris as a very similar box belonging to Marie Antoinette had recently been stolen from the Louvre" Condition: 3" of tiny bone striping on the top is missing. Price: $2,875.00.
