Fine Metal Ware from The Drawing Room of Newport

# 5779. An American Gothic style Castor Set. Silver Plate. Hallmark for Roswell Gleason & Sons, Dorchester, Ma. Marked: "Patent Applied for" Condition: the plating is in very good condition. The 6 cut glass bottles appear to be period along with the tops. Functions well: turning the top knob opens the condiment doors and revolves the bottles. From "Encyclopedia of American Silver Manufacturers" "R. Gleason & Sons Dorchester Ma. Began with Roswell Gleason who was a worker in 1822. He was first listed as a pewterer about 1830. He was noted for the extremely fine quality of his work. This quality was carried over into britannia work later when the business became of the largest and most important in Dorchester. After 1850 their products were mostly silverplate. The business closed in 1871." Size: 9" across at the base and 17.5" tall. Price: $1,500.00.
