# 5482. A single American gilt and carved wood desk chair. Japanesque revival, circa 1885. "Imitation bamboo" carved and gold gilt wood with ivy leaves carved into the crest. This chair is exceptional in its design and execution. New York City and Boston were the centers of production for this style furniture in the United States. Known manufacturers of this style furniture at the time were: (in New York City) A.A. Vantine & Co. - R.J.Horner - Herter Bros. - Herts Bros. ( in Boston Massachusetts) The American Bamboo Company - J.W. Wall. Gilded furniture was especially popular in Newport Rhode Island, where this chair has resided for the last 100 or more years. Size: seat: 17" wide x 16" deep and 19" tall; the chair is 35.5" tall. Condition: scuffs and loss to the gilt surface; no breaks or repairs. Upholstered in a Aesthetic design silk fabric.
