The John & Rico Collection of

# 5235. A fine and rare Veilleuse from the Jacob Petit Factory. We had the privilege of being visited by Mr. Harold Newman a number of years ago. With a copy of his book "Veilleuses a definitive review of ceramic food and tea warmers of the 18th and 19th century" in our library, Mr. Newman was kind enough to sign our book: " During an interesting visit to Newport, Best Wishes, Harold Newman 19-9-92". He states on page 78 of his book " And in any event the veilleuses of Jacob Petit (and particularly those bearing his underglaze blue initials) are the French tea warmers most sought and prized by the vast majority of private collectors today." Our example is marked on the underside of the tea pot and base. Size: app. 11" tall and a 4.25" octagonal base. Age: 1840-50. Condition: the lid has both 'tits' removed with edge restoration; two of the snake heads supports are broken off; gilt loss and minor paint loss consistent with use and age. No apparent cracks. This highly unusual form and decoration is very exotic with North African/Middle Eastern stylized characters and decorative elements. The base color is pale salmon with black and terra-cotta polychromed renderings; gilt work in various areas for effect. There are four elements: lid, pot, standard and base. An admirable addition to any European / Veilleuse Porcelain collection. Price: $1,750.00.
