# 5218. A pair (2)of Art Pottery vases fitted for electricity. In the Egyptian Style. Size of the vase itself is: 10" tall with at base size of 3" across. Fitted as lamps they are approximately 24" tall with a lamp base diameter of 4.5". Condition: drilled with a lamp hole on the underside; there is scuffing to the surface consistent with use and age. One of the vases is marked with the name: P. Ibsen Kjobenhavn. Terra-cotta base material with gold gilt, deep red and additional polychrome decorations. All the art on these vases are hand drawn. Peter Ipsen trained at Royal Copenhagen until 28 years old when he opened his own pottery in 1843. He died at the age of 45 in 1860, but his wife continued to run the pottery. The mark was changed in 1870. As described in "In Pursuit of Beauty": "The Danish terra-cotta vases, their hand-painted decoration described by on critic as 'Greek figures and clear-cut conventional foliage' in red or black on a black or buff ground, were strict reproductions of antique objects copied from specimens at the Thorvaldsens Museum. Madame Ipsen's copies, part of the Danish display at the Philadelphia Exposition (1876), impressed American visitors and may have planted the idea of reproductions in manufacturers' minds." This pair of vases could easily have been purchased at the Philadelphia Exposition from the booth of Mrs. Ipsen. The hand made lamp shades are decorated to copy designs on the vases. Price: $3,400.00 for the pair.
