From John & Rico's

The Drawing Room of Newport Antiques

# 5172aa. A fine silk and lace shawl. From a collection of lace brought to England from Vienna by a lady escaping from the Nazi occupation during WWII. Circa 1895. The silk is embroidered with flowers which are outlined with silver/metallic thread and hand knotted stamens in yellow thread. Two sides of this shawl are decorated with hand made lace of the finest and most delicate design. The lace may be of an earlier era. The shawl itself style wise represents the Wiener Werkstatte era of design. Size: 41" x 29". Condition: a tear in the lace border on one side plus small holes in other areas; several small tears in the silk section between flowers; small sections of the silver metallic decoration has come slightly detached in some area. Secession textiles of this era seldom survived considering two world wars and a cultural revolution occurred within its existence. Value: priceless -This item has been sold.
