American Girandoles: Candle-powered lighting of the 19th century
____________________________________________________________________

# 5156. A pair of rare "Morning Glory" Girandoles. Probably American; possibly Hooper of Boston. Circa 1847. Single marble base; fire gilt bronze; crystal candle cups. Size: marble base is 4" x 7", the gilt bronze footing is just shy of 3" x 5"; 14.5" wide and 20" tall to the top of the crystal candle cups. Condition: fitted for electricity prior to 1930. Because we have never seen this form of Girandole before we do not know if there were prism rings below the crystal candle cups or even if the candle cups are contemporary with the rest. Loss to one of the cut glass candle cups. The leaves of the morning glory vine appear to be almost life size. The gilt bronze bases are rough and rocky with the appearance of the ground. The design appears sculptural and is quite successful. A switch was installed in the bronze base of each Girandole. The fire/gilt patina is, though not perfect, in quite good condition. The form appears to be right out of the Crystal Palace idiom. The Exhibition of London 1851 was represented by decorative arts from all over the world. The Morning Glory decor was used in porcelain, lamps, bronzes, carved marble statuary, etc. P.O.R.

Please note the loss to one of the cut glass candle cups.
