# 5024. An Art Nouveau Goblet, c. 1903. Silver, gilded silver, garnets, height 7" (18cm). Marked "Munchen-900- (indistinctly) Beiden". We are not positive of the maker, we just know that this item was made in Munich. This organic form represents a pomegranate with the upper body supported on a stem encircled with leaves and vines. The goblet itself is set with garnets representing the seeds of the pomegranate. This theme of the goblet has been documented on page 105 of "Art Nouveau in Munich" a catalogue of an exhibition at the Philadelphia Museum of Art written by Kathryn Bloom Hiesinger published in 1988. ISBN 0-8763-076-6. Form on page 105 (#81) was designed by Ernst Riegel (1871-1939) and the text states "The form of the vessel recalls that of Late Gothic 'apple goblets,' although it has been reinterpreted in the sense of floral Jugendstil to form a tree with roots and pruned foliage." The goblets shown here is thematically similar using the pomegranate as the stylized design element. P.O.R.

Marks: hall mark - 900 - Munchen. We presume that the 900 is 900 parts out of 1000 silver.

The goblet (inside and outside) and round base is gold gilt The stems and leaves are silver color. The foliage on the top of the goblet is also silver color.

We are not exactly sure of the makers name mark: Looks like Beiden with an initial preceeded the name followed by the hall mark. The German assaying marks are the cresent moon and crown.
