THE GRAND TOUR

A COLLECTION OF OBJECTS PURCHASED BY TRAVELERS ABROAD

# 4863. A bronze Grand Tour Figural Group titled: "the Wrestlers". The original dates from B.C. 350. "The splendid group of the Wrestlers is considered to be the masterpiece of the Greek realistic school. The strain and muscular action of the two athletes is well displayed. When found, the head of the victor was missing and it was replaced with another antique head lacking in expression. The original is in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence." The size of this bronze copy is 11" by 20" x 16.5" tall. It weighs 64 lbs. Age: late 19th century (possibly earlier). Patina: excellent. A corner of this bronze was dropped and suffered cracks as noted in the detailed images. The ankle of the victor is cracked and the base in that corner shows cracks with old repairs. Probably Italian. Price: $7,500.00.

The detail in the hands and feet are really quite good, showing nails, veins and muscles.

Please note the break in the ankle of the athlete.

The fracture in the base denotes that this very heavy bronze was dropped on the corner causing the fracture to the base and the ankle of the athlete.

The two red arrows show that location of the two base fractures.
