Item number 4637. A rooster form vase: form number 7993. The number indicates that this form was designed by Sàndor Apàti Abt. Factory marks and incised form number. Size: 8.5" tall. Condition: without flaws. About Abt: Apàti Abt Sàndor was born in 1870 and died in 1916. He studied at the National Hungarian Royal School of Applied Arts between 1885 and 1888 and then studied in Munich for a period of time. When he returned to Hungary, he studied in the workshop of Alajos Strobl. He began working at the Zsolnay factory in 1898 and continued there until 1908. His designs include some of the best of the art pottery produced at the Zsolnay Factory during his tenure. While at the factory he also taught ceramics at the Zsolnay Ceramics School. In 1909 he moved from Pecs to Budapest where he became a teacher at the Metropolitan School of Industrial Design.I can really find no reference to this glaze in any of our books about Zsolnay. It may be a singular example of this glaze. It is our first example of it in inventory. It is a heavily cast moulded form. It is a rare Secession design and decor. P.O.R.
