John & Rico's

# 4555. A rare and unusual planter. Probably made in Austria or Bohemia. Terra Cotta. Polychromed. Size: 28" overall height. The pot holder is 9.5" deep and has a minimum width of 6.5". The bottom has a footprint of 9" x 12". The Hobbit - Troll - Elf - Gnome is protruding from the tree 8.5". As described: A lower section of a birch tree is split open allowing the male character to lean out from inside the trunk; mushrooms grow out of the floor of the trunk; the top section is hollow to allow for a (real) plant. We would date this item between 1875 and 1914. This item is made in two sections: the figure was cast separately and attached from the inside with wire and wooden 'keys'. Condition: flaking to the painted surface; repairs to the lower section (about 8 square inches on the lower left section was broken into 5 sections and repaired: not noticeable from the outside). This item is not shippable and must be picked up from our gallery. Price: $1,500.00.
