To quote Werlich: "Order and Decorations of All Nations": This order was "Established by King John VI of Portugal and Brazil on September 10, 1819 in honor of the Virgin Mary, Patroness of Portugal. It was awarded to individuals, Portuguese or foreign, for both civil or military merit. It was frequently awarded to Portuguese-Americans and to Brazilians" Came in Five Classes and was abolished in 1910. The Badge: Nine pointed, gold rimmed, white enamel star. Between each ray of the star appear gold flames and a small five pointed star superimposed. Center medallion is gold and has the initials M.A. surrounded by a gold rimmed, blue band inscribed with gold 'PADROEIRA DO REINO'(Patroness of the Kindgom). Badge is suspended from a gold crown." Condition: as shown in the photos one side of the badge has a loss to one of the rays and the other side has hair lines to two of the rays. The center medallion rotates and is loose; one side of the medallion has a flake to the blue enamel at the top. No ribbon and no box. Probably Commander Class. The size of this badge is app. 2.5" across. Price: $850.00.
