# 4219. A fine 18th century carved wood statue. Subject is Mary Magdalene. Originally polychromed: this figure experienced a traumatic event - fire, bombing, looting - the surface was very distressed and was apparently scraped to remove most traces of gesso and paint and gold. European origin. Probably Austrian or Hungarian. Purchased by a family in Budapest, Hungary in the late 19th century. This fine statue stayed in the family in their townhouse in Budapest until 1956 when it was shipped to the United States when the family moved here. It is 39" tall. There are various wood splits, old repairs, worm holes and finish losses to this statue. This carving dates from at least 1750 however, it could date as early as 1700-1720.Price: $7,500.00.

Photos taken by the family in Budapest of their townhouse parlour showing the statue.

There are pencil notations on the back of the statue.
