# 249. Shown are a pair of figures - Transylvanian Princes - made of Pyrogranite at The Zsolnay Factory of Pecs Hungary. Size: each 19.5" tall; base - 5.5" x 5.75". It is our understanding that these figures were models for much larger statues made to decorate the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest. The only marks are on one of the backs of one of the figures: incised "801" and a four digit number we can not make out. We would date these figures to about 1890. 252 Pyrogranite statues were designed and made at The Zsolnay Factory for the Parliament which was finished in 1902. Construction began in 1885. There written information under the paragraph titled: " Pyrogranite Statues" (page 184) in BARD's wonderful book titled: "Hungarian Ceramics from the Zsolnay Manufactory" which was the catalogue for their Zsolnay Exhibition a number of years ago in New York City. The paint is a thin majolica glaze which I would describe as a tin-glaze. The coat and inner garment of the figure on the right is exceptionally decorated with an overall design. Condition: scuffs consistent with use and age; no repairs or losses that we are aware of. Sold only as a pair. P.O.R.
