# 240. Pictured is a c. 1910 cachepot designed by Sandor Pillo Hidasy at the Zsolnay Factory. The theme is Titiana {from A Mid-Summers Nights Dream} walking through the night (with a rising full moon) being followed by four deer. A forest of Birch trees add contrast to the landscape. 8" across and 9" tall. This form which is dated 1910 relates to the American Arts & Crafts Movement of the same decade. Arthur Wesley Dow and his contemporaries similar landscapes in wood block prints, ceramics (vases and tiles), textiles, art (paintings and watercolors) and photography. The view of a rising moon through birch trees is common to the Arts and Crafts theme. As this particular decor surfaced after Zsolnay's participation in the Saint Louis World Fair of 1904, I suspect that it's inspiration came from viewing American exhibition pieces at that exhibition. Form number 8389. Signed and dated and a round raised factory mark. Glaze: night muted colors of greys, greens, blue and reflected white from the moon light. It is unusual for any Zsolnay item to be marked with the artist signature, the factory did not encourage individuals signatures on items, the just wanted the factory name. This is a very special and rare item. Condition: as noted in one of the photos, there is a star glaze line in the bottom side around the center of the cachepot. These glaze lines are not apparent in the inside of the pot; there appears to be a small side restoration or at least an area where the glaze did not 'hold'. P.O.R.
