The Zsolnay Store offering fine antique Zsolnay ceramics

# 104. A Zsolnay Factory Old Ivory Medieval decor Pitcher. Size: 8" tall. Marks: incised form number 2853 "Zsolnay Pecs" and painted gold factory mark. Condition: excellent, the gold is bright and lusterious. To quote from Laszlo Guygyi's book "Zsolnay Art Pottery: the Guygyi Collection" the chapter "On the Boundaries of Past and Future-objects created for the Millennial Celebration": "Among other predecessors of the millennial style could be considered object patterned after medieval ivory carvings, which Zsolnay borrowed in 1889-1891 from the Hungarian National Museum and Kunstgewerbe Museum in Vienna. Zsolnay also adapted sarmentose ornamentation, resembling stone carvings in Romanesque Hungarian churches. . . " This pitcher shows medieval figures on horses in a garden with animal decorations. Three large rondels with five smaller rondels and a banded frieze compose the very raised decorations.P.O.R.
